Stop Distance dissects total stopping distance into three measurable segments that every driver experiences but rarely quantifies. The app calculates perception distance—how far you travel while noticing the hazard—using your current speed multiplied by perception time. Next comes reaction distance, the space covered while your foot moves from accelerator to brake pedal.
The final segment, braking distance, depends on velocity squared divided by twice the deceleration rate, which changes dramatically based on surface type. Dry asphalt with ABS provides teaching deceleration of 21.5 ft/s², while packed snow plummets to 6.5 ft/s², causing braking distance to jump from 69 feet to 216 feet at the same initial speed.
Every parameter adjustment updates all three segments instantly. Road grade modifiers apply beneficial shortening for uphill approaches or lengthening for downhill grades. The visual bar displays perception in teal, reaction in amber, and braking in red, with distances labeled above each segment so you see exactly where the envelope widens when conditions deteriorate.
Modify speed with precision sliders, select from four surface conditions, and set road grade from steep downhill to steep uphill. Watch total stopping distance recalculate in real time with perception, reaction, and braking segments displayed proportionally on a horizontal bar chart.
Interactive test measures your actual perception-reaction time by recording the interval between stimulus and response. The app stores your five most recent trials locally and calculates an average you can instantly apply to all stopping distance calculations for personalized accuracy.
Pre-configured sudden-stop situations include amber traffic light dilemmas, school zone cones, deer on shoulders, and packed snow crosswalks. Each scenario shows hazard distance, your calculated envelope, and whether you have clearance, with color-coded badges indicating safety margins.
Save custom configurations for different vehicles and driving contexts—motorcycles with ABS at highway speeds, light trucks on gravel approaches, passenger cars in rain commutes. Switch between saved presets instantly to compare stopping envelopes across your real-world vehicle fleet.
Small iOS widget shows your last calculated stopping distance directly on the home screen without opening the app. Perfect for quick reference during driver education study sessions or before heading out in changing weather conditions that affect braking performance.
Plain-language explanation screen shows the teaching model formula with current lab values substituted into perception, reaction, and braking equations. See exactly how deceleration coefficients change by surface and why beneficial grade shortens stops while downhill lengthens them.
Stop Distance transforms the abstract concept of "leave enough room" into concrete, measurable distances through interactive physics calculations. Designed as a study model for driver education, the app uses teaching coefficients based on standard braking scenarios. All data remains stored locally on your device with no internet connection required, no user accounts, and no cloud synchronization, ensuring complete privacy for your practice sessions and reaction time measurements.
